US DOD IPV6 Mandate

US DOD IPV6 Mandate

There’s always been apathy and negative sentiment for justifying the work needed to setup IPv6 on IT infra these days. But in case you didn’t know nearly 50% of all google traffic, not to mention many others worldwide, currently ride on IPv6 only! Microsoft over the past few years silently changed the preferred IP protocol to version 6, which means that if you have an IPv6 address it’ll prefer to use that over IPv4. So what does all that mean? Well you got it right, we’re starting to see mandates, requirements, and overall industry alignment these past few years requiring vendors, platforms, apps, and services to move exclusively to IPv6. So for the average business, organization, student or consumer…the time is now to get IPv6 up and working!

Google actually publishes real time adoption stats for their platform via the IPv6 Adoption site…and companies like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and others are quietly enabling their IPv6 services at an explosive rate. I actually worked at Facebook for ten years, and during that time, very early on we decided to move exclusively to IPv6 after we exhausted all the RFC1918 address space on server/network/storage systems.

Lastly the United States Department of Defense in 2021 mandated their bigger IT systems migrate exclusively to IPv6, and here’s the proof that the time is now for the wider industry to adopt a plan to as well.

If you find this topic overwhelming or have no idea where to start, the FireByte Group is here to help. We’ve been working with, migrating, planning and supporting teams for a long time with the transition to IPv6, and we’d love to help you too. Check out the DOD memo below, and reach out! We’ll do a quick assessment figure out the what and how for you enabling IPv6 in your network, and at the very least we can get IPv6 setup on your internet to your front door.
